A week later, the honeymoon couple returned home and invited everyone for a get-together at the Silver R Ranch. The late-summer evening was perfect for an outdoor barbecue.

Even though Paige was busy setting up her office, she was eager to see Leah, and she admitted to herself, Reed, too.

It hadn’t taken much encouragement for her family to include Reed in their gathering, especially after all the attention he’d shown Paige.

The memory of their trip to Denver, and Reed’s kiss still had her reeling. But that had been the last one. He hadn’t been by her office to check on her, or even at her parents’ Inn. Over the past week she’d only caught glimpses of him in his patrol car around town. He’d tossed her a wave, but that was as close as she’d gotten. It was good that he’d got on with his life, and she could live hers.

Paige turned off the highway and the ranch house came into view. Seeing the familiar black truck, her pulse began to race. She told herself she was excited to see her sister, but she knew Reed had been the big draw.

She got out and reached in back to pull out a large Queen Elizabeth rosebush she’d bought as a house-warming present and headed for the deck out back. Hearing the laughter, she quickened her steps. Since moving out of her parents’ a few days ago, she realized just how much she’d missed her family.

Paige turned the corner and saw Reed right off, drinking a tall glass of iced tea. He probably had to go on patrol later.

Leah and Holt were wrapped in a loving embrace. Their smiling nine-year-old son, Corey, standing close by. No doubt he was happy that his parents were back home.

“I heard the world traveler was back in town.”

Leah broke away and ran to greet her. “Paige,” she cried as she hugged her, ignoring the rosebush. “How are you feeling?”

Paige laughed. “I’m feeling good, but you’re smashing your welcome home gift.”

Leah released her, but her smile held fast. “Oh, it’s beautiful. Is it guaranteed not to die?” Holt appeared at her side and slipped a protective arm around her. The couple exchanged a look that seemed to heat the air between them. Paige glanced toward the deck to find Reed watching her.

“Honey, look what Paige brought us.”

Never taking his eyes from his wife, he said, “It’s beautiful, Paige. Thank you.”

Paige smiled. “You’re welcome. I’d ask how the honeymoon went, but I can see you both had a wonderful time.”

“Hawaii was incredible,” Leah gushed. “We swam and snorkeled and we walked on the beach…caught every beautiful sunset…” Leah turned to Holt as a blush rose across her cheeks. “And sunrises…”

“For someone who had spent the last four years traveling the world,” her new husband said, “you seemed pretty captivated by the Hawaiian Islands.”

Leah looked up at Holt. “I guess it was the company, and your persuasive ways.” She leaned closer and whispered something that Paige didn’t want to hear.

“I think I’ll go say hi to Mom and Dad.
